Year 2 - Elm Class
Mrs Harding
When pupils move into Year 2 we really begin to see their characters flourish as they learn more about themselves and the world around them. In Elm Class, all the basic knowledge and skills, that they have been busy learning in Reception and Year 1, fall into place. Our pupils begin to make connections between what they are currently learning and what they have learnt in the past; when this begins to happen, it is exciting to see.
Year 2 expects a little more of its pupils, developing their independence and self-reliance. Learning is more structured and moves at a faster pace. Where phonics is a big focus in Year 1, Year 2’s focus moves more towards grammar and spelling patterns, allowing pupils to understand about word structure so that they can develop their independent reading and writing skills.
Mrs Harding teaches Year 2 and, despite the increase in demand, ensures learning is fun, active and exciting. Part of her responsibility is to prepare our pupils for their move into Key Stage Two the following year. Mrs Harding also has the very important job of organising Year 2’s traditional maypole dance at our annual Rose Festival, which is always a highlight of the event.
Mrs Sarah Harding
I started working at Overton St Helen’s in September 2012. After teaching in a large city school in Sunderland for five years prior, I was delighted to get the opportunity to move back to the North West, near where I completed my teacher training in Ambleside. I fell in love with the area and with the school, so I have never looked back!I began as class teacher in Willow Class before moving into a PPA role and out again! This suited the needs of my own young family as I worked part time. Since then I have taught in both Key Stages 1 and 2, some time in each class at some point! Currently I teach our Year 2’s in Elm Class using my experience and knowledge of how the children have started their journey lower down school, but also knowing what they need to do ...
I am subject lead for English and PE across school. I have a passion for helping children to unlock language skills in both reading and writing to enable them to express themselves and enjoy literature. Alongside this, I also believe that providing the children with access to high quality physical education is imperative. That’s why you will often see me in PE kit, teaching a lesson, supporting others or taking one of our fabulous sports teams to a competition!
Outside of school I love to spend time with my own two children. Most weekends I am watching my daughter in a gymnastic event or supporting my son in either football or tennis. As a family we often go on adventures, walks and bike rides in the Lake District.
