Maple Class

First stop – Maple Class!

Children begin their primary school journey in Reception Class, during the school year in which they turn 5 years old. The curriculum they continue to follow as they grow and develop new confidence, knowledge and skills is the Early Years Foundation Stage which is a birth to five year old curriculum, so our Maple Class learning environment is very similar to that of a nursery class. It is full of interesting areas of provision, inside and outside where children can play, investigate, explore and get creative.

Helen Marsland leads our EYFS. She and her team support the development of our youngest pupils through ‘In the Moment Planning’ making learning child centred, led by them and their chosen activities. Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal and Social Development are the core areas of development that we prioritise, building up confidence, resilience and a can-do attitude that becomes the foundation of all future learning in school. During the Reception year, pupils also begin to build up their knowledge of Phonics, the initial building blocks of reading, writing and number skills.

When you step into Maple Class, you will see a busy, active classroom where pupils are beginning to make friendships, enjoying their learning and are loving their first year in school!

Mrs Helen Marsland

I have been teaching at Overton St Helen’s School since September 2013. During my teaching career I have taught across all primary year groups but primarily across Key Stage 1 and Early Years. My passion lies in Early Years education. I believe in the importance of providing an inspiring, supportive, child led learning environment along with quality adult interactions that allow all children to move forward in their learning.

I am also the subject leader for Science and PSHE. I have developed our science curriculum to reflect and encourage the principles of the Morecambe Bay Curriculum, with a particular focus on outdoor learning and nurturing connections to the natural world and the place where we live. I understand the importance of teaching and promoting ...
... good mental health and well-being as well as encouraging healthy relationships and healthy lifestyles. Therefore, I regularly review and develop our PSHE curriculum to reflect the needs of all our children.

When I am not in school, I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether it is walking with my dog Rosie or reading a good book in my garden!
