Overton St Helen's Primary School family news: Issue 9(26/27)

Weekly Round Up

It's been wonderful to see all our pupils return to school after the half-term break this week. After a week's rest and a few bleary eyes on Tuesday morning, we have quickly picked up the pace of the school day and the normal rhythms of learning have resumed.

With that said, we look forward to all that this term promises (the dates section below has been added to, so please take careful note of each event). We have our final Open Morning for prospective parents next Tuesday morning, a trip in store for Years 5 and 6 at the beginning of December, an upcoming football tournament for Years 3 and 4 and of course the usual festive flurry at the end of term. Lot's to look forward to.

This morning in celebration worship, I was particularly pleased to announce some prize winners from the Overton Autumn Horticultural Show - well done to all that entered. I was also pleased to share the news that our wonderful pumpkin, grown lovingly in our polytunnel, won second prize! We are now faced with the challenge of putting it to good use, especially so that ALL our pupils can taste it!

Helping at Home with Spellings

A recurring request at our parents evening last half-term was ideas on how to help at home with learning spellings. Below is a document giving you four different ideas for how to help your child learn their weekly spellings.

Our approach to learning spellings in school, is to learn the spelling patterns of words. Our KS2 classes now have three weekly discreet spelling sessions and our Year 2 class, daily sessions. This is all in a bid to become confident spellers and helping at home is an essential part of that. Have a go with the ideas we have shared with you and please feel welcome to ask your child's class teacher for more.

OSFA Christmas Fair

It's that time of year again when our wonderful OSFA committee are beginning to make plans for the school Christmas Fair, coming up at the beginning of December - that's only 4 weeks away!!

We are desperately in need of two things - help on the day of the event and raffle prizes.

If you can think of anyone who owns a business and would be kind enough to donate a raffle prize, please get in touch with them and let us know. If indeed you own a business and could donate a raffle prize yourself, that would be brilliant.

On the day of the event we need lots of helpers. It's hard work to get the Christmas Fair together for all to enjoy, but I can promise lots of laughter and a good atmosphere too. If you feel you may be able to help set up a stall or get prizes and resources ready, please get in touch with Charlotte Lynch (parent in Elm & Oak class), Lucy Baxter (parent in Beech & Maple), Sammy Wannop (parent in Beech & Elm) or Chloe Jones (parent in Holly & Oak). Ask your child's teacher to point you in their direction if you're not sure who these lovely ladies are.

Thank you in advance.

Children in Need

Next Friday is Children in Need - a wonderful national charity that helps vulnerable children and those in need all over our country.

At Overton we feel that giving our help to fellow children in need is something we must do and so next Friday, we will be having a non-uniform day to raise some money. Pupils can come to school in their own clothes, with optional Pudsey themed regalia, for a minimum donation of £1. I am always overwhelmed by the generosity of our parents, so I ask you to please give generously next Friday to this amazing charity.

Thank you.

Stars of the Week

Well done to Evelyn in Holly Class, Imogen in Elm, Meadow in Willow Class, Orlaith in Beech and Edith in Oak who are our Stars of the Week, being given the award for their focus and hard work, showing enthusiasm , patience and determination in their learning.

Well done.
