Overton St Helen's Primary School family news: Issue 7

Weekly Round Up

It's been yet another great week in school with so much learning taking place in lessons. In particular this week, I have shown many prospective parents round the school and every time we have visited classes, our pupils have their heads down, engrossed in the lessons they are learning. From whales and archeology to leaf- crowns and robot dances, its all happening at Overton!

On Monday Oak Class walked over to Sunderland Point to continue their work on the salt marsh, observing the plant life and recording their finding using micro-bit technology. Today, Liz Edwards was back with us, uploading the data they recorded and showing them how to interpret their findings, what this means for the salt-marsh and then identifying what we can do to help. It's really interesting stuff and very, very important for our local environment.

It's the last week of half-term next week, where units of work will come to a conclusion, when teachers will have the opportunity at parents evening to tell you about how your child has settled in to the year, and when we will also fit in some good fun with Morecambe Bay Day on Wednesday 22nd and the OSFA Glow Disco on Thursday 23rd. Lot's to look forward to.

Morecambe Bay Day

Next Wednesday, we will be celebrating Morecambe Bay Day. This is a new local initiative, led by Morecambe Bay Partnership , who work tirelessly on so many important projects from community development, environmental studies, conservation and education and arts initiatives. Putting it simply, it's a perfect chance to celebrate our beautiful Bay.

We will be following the local theme 'Beauty Surrounds, Health Abounds', completing art activities in class, taking part in skipping challenges throughout the day and getting out and about the village. ALL children need to come in PE kit next Wednesday.

Morecambe Bay Partnership use Morecambe Bay Day to also raise awareness of the many amazing charities that help people around the Bay. We thought we could try to raise a few pounds for these causes and so would like to ask for any spare silver change to be sent into school that day. Collectively, we are going to attempt to make a giant, silver Morecambe Bay Coastline. Many thanks in advance.

Overton & District Horticultural Society Autumn Show

Next Saturday, 25th October, Overton & District Horticultural Society will be holding their 58th Autumn Show. We plan to enter some items into the show, including some of the artwork produced in class on Morecambe Bay Day, as well as examples of handwriting from our older classes.

We are also excited to enter some of the veggies we have grown in our Polytunnel, namely potatoes (seeing if we can replicate our success at the Summer Show), beetroot and a rather enormous turnip!

There are lots more opportunities for everyone to enter the show, young or old. Follow the Facebook link on the poster opposite to see the range of classes that can be entered - we may just have a prize winning baker or photographer amongst our parents!

200 Club

It's not too late to purchase a number for OSFA's 200 Club raffle, the first draw of which will be taking place next Friday morning. Pick up a flyer from the entrance porch and return your order with £5 per number to school or simple BACS it straight across to OSFA.

You've got to be in it, to win it!

St John's Hospice October Half-Term Challenge

St John's Hospice need our children's help. They have set down an October half-term challenge to all school pupils in our area, to raise just £24 over their Autumn break. If you have any good ideas and feel this might be both a fun and extremely worthwhile thing to do, then follow the QR code to register your interest. St John's Hospice is such a precious resource in our community and they absolutely deserve our effort and support.

Many thanks in advance.

Logs Needed!

We are desperately in need of some new seating in our Forest School area in the form of tree trunk sections, big enough to sit on. If you know of anyone who has recently cut down a tree, or any of our wonderful farming families who may have some going spare, please let us know, or better still, bring them our way. We will be extremely grateful.

Stars of the Week

Well done to Teddy in Holly Class, Freya-Rose in Elm, Noah in Willow Class, Bobby in Beech and Billy in Oak who are our Stars of the Week for working extremely hard in class, with brilliant focus and enthusiasm. Well done all.
