Overton St Helen's Primary School family news: Issue 30(25/26)
Weekly Round Up
It's been a great first week back in school. All the children appear to have grown in the sunshine and enjoyed the week's rest. So as we begin the final half-term of the school year we look forward to preparing for changes and departures. This half-term will be punctuated by special events giving us lots to get excited about.
Next Monday is the first of those as we host the annual district Cross Country Competition. Schools from around our local area will join us to compete in both KS1 and KS2 races and we look forward to seeing who will take home the shield this year.
The second of these special events is next Wednesday, when we are due to hold our annual school sports day, starting at 9am on the school field. However, looking at the weather forecast, at the moment it is highly likely that we will have to cancel. It goes without saying that we would want it to go ahead as planned but trying to predict this changeable weather, or even interpreting forecasts correctly, is almost impossible. Therefore, we will make a decision early next week to try to give parents as much notice as possible. Please stand by the text message system.
Blue Influencers Project
Oak Class have been given the fabulous opportunity to work with Morecambe Bay Partnership this half-term, taking part in their Blue Influencers Project. This comes with access to funding in order to run an environmental campaign for their local area. The children have already had a few sessions working with practitioners from MBP to identify the focus of their campaign and next week, they will be undertaking some field study at Sunderland Point in order to inform their work.
This work will be continuing into the following academic year, but proves to be beneficial to all involved. Our pupils will see first hand how taking action over an issue that they care about, can lead to change - and hopefully, our local area will be able to benefit from that change.
Watch this space for more information as this project develops.
Rose Festival Thanks
A big thank you again to all who came to join us for the Rose Festival at the end of last half-term. It was such a joyous afternoon.
A huge thank you to all those brilliant mums and dads (and quite possibly grandmas and grandads) who baked cakes for the afternoon. Collectively, we raised £360 for St John's Hospice, which is a fantastic total.
We still have lots of cake boxes left in the staffroom - if you are missing some, please just ask.
Staff News
It is with many congratulations and also some sadness, that I announce Mrs West's decision to hang up her teaching-assistant boots at the end of the academic year and enjoy a well earned retirement!
Debbie has been part of the Overton team as school cook, caretaker, welfare assistant and teaching assistant in numerous classes, with numerous teachers, for 23 years! It goes without saying that she will be sorely missed, but I also hope she will be back to visit every now and again.
We will be celebrating her retirement and thanking her for her commitment to Overton St Helen's at the end of the school year.
Stars of the Week
Well done to Alba in Maple Class, Grace in Holly Class, Charlotte in Elm, Ted in Willow Class, Harrison in Beech Class and Emily C in Oak, who were our Stars of the Week, for showing continued enthusiasm and maturity in their learning and contributing greatly to class discussions. A big welcome to Alba and Harrison who have joined our school this week; we are really happy to have you with us!
A shout-out needs to also go to our Stars of the Week just before half-term who didn't get a mention due to the absence of the newsletter. So, well done to Louie in Maple Class, Mila in Holly, Maisie in Elm, Oscar in Willow, Flynn in Beech and Henry in Oak who showed hard work and amazing effort all that week.
