Overton St Helen's Primary School family news: Issue 21

Weekly Round Up

We come to the end of another busy week in school as we speed through the half-term, with only two more weeks before we break for Easter.

A highlight of the week has to be the Year 5 trip to London. It was an early start and a late finish to the day, however well worth the effort. We began the day with a tour of the Houses of Parliament, then after a picnic lunch by the Thames, we walked from Parliament, up Whitehall, past Downing Street, through Horse Guards Parade, through St James' Park to Buckingham Palace and then finally down the Mall to Trafalgar Square, before getting the tube back to Euston and our train home. Our Year 5 group were brilliant, representing our school amazingly and it was a real pleasure to take them.

Yesterday, four of our Year 6 pupils attended a story writing workshop with Emily Hennessey, creator of the local story Made by the Moon. This was to support Oak Class's project to create a Local Story based upon the research they have conducted about Overton and the surrounding area.

Lancaster and District 'Big Sing' Festival

I hope you are all looking forward to next week's Big Sing festivals. Elm Class will be joining other schools in the area for their performance at the Ashton Hall in Lancaster on Monday evening, at 7pm and then our Choir will be joining other Key Stage Two groups for their performance on Thursday evening, also at 7pm. Tickets have now been allocated and I hope you are all excited to hear the outcome of the children's hard work.

During the day of each performance, there will be a rehearsal at Ashton Hall. Pupils need to bring specific things for the rehearsals and the performances, so please refer to the teacher's letters about what these are. Many thanks to those parents who have volunteered lifts to and from Lancaster for members of the choir. A separate email will be coming your way confirming timings, but thank you for the offer.

Outdoor and Adventurous Days

Next Friday, 28th March, the final group of pupils from Holly Class and all of Maple Class will be going out of school for an outdoor adventure, right to the top of Warton Crag! Two groups from Holly Class have successfully completed the challenge already and have had a great time doing so. I am sure next Friday will be equally successful.

Lunchtime Assistant Vacancy.

As mentioned in last week's newsletter, we are on the look out for someone to cover Miss West's welfare post whilst she is away on maternity leave. If you, or someone you know are interested in this temporary opportunity, please get in touch or pop into the office where Mrs Barry will be able to give you more details.

Mental Health Support Team Parent Workshop

Next Thursday afternoon, we have our third parent workshop led by the Mental Health Support Team, on Understanding Behaviour. Feedback from parents who have already attended some of the parent workshops this year has been really positive, with many feeling they give valuable insight into things they are experiencing at home with their children. There will be a cuppa and a biscuit to welcome you in to school next Thursday afternoon - please consider joining us if you think it may help you.
