Overton St Helen's Primary School family news: Issue 2
Weekly Round Up
We've got to the end of our first full week of the year and although we are all a little tired, it's been a great week with a great shared attitude around school. We've been dodging the rain showers and there has been more than one soggy PE lesson, but on the whole, we are all still smiling!
This week, our KS2 classes have been put through their team-building paces with Mr Wilcock, Lancashire PE coach, practicing the important skills of listening to one another and working together. We also welcomed back an old friend of the school, Liz Edwards, who has worked with our classes on many different environmental projects in the past. This time, Liz is working with Oak Class to study the growth of the Salt Marsh at Sunderland Point. They will be learning about the importance of this, using scientific skills to identify plant life and using coding and maths skills to record the observations our pupils will make when working out in the field.
I am pleased to report that our new starters are settling in brilliantly to the school - by the end of next week, they will be in full attendance, however our Y6 pupils will be there to help them as they navigate the playground and lunch hall.
School Communication
The beginning of a school year is a good time to remind all our parents about the importance of home to school and school to home communication. Please make sure we have your up to date mobile numbers and email addresses as we rely on these to get messages and letters to you. We will be using email to get letters to you more this year, in a bid to reduce the amount of paper we use, so please remember to check your emails too.
The service we use for messages and emails is called Teachers2Parents. There is a Teachers2Parents app that can be downloaded which gives you handy notifications for when a message has been sent. Please consider downloading this as it may make your life a bit easier.
School & Worship Councils
This morning in worship, we introduced our School Council and Worship Council members for the new school year.
Joining our existing members of the Worship Council, that's Alice, Ava, Henry, Georgia, Orlaith, Emily, Frankie and Charles, we welcome Lily, Mason, Emily, Sofia and Jacob. They will work with Mr Wood over the year to lead some of our worships, help with charitable fund-raising efforts and contribute to the Christian ethos of our school.
This week, school council elections were held in classes after many of our pupils put themselves forwards to be considered for School Council. Thank you to those who were brave enough to put their names forward.
After the votes were counted, we welcome Tommy and Robyn from Holly Class, Joey and Poppy from Elm Class, Nate and Marcie from Willow Class, Flynn, Orlaith, Martha and Jaxon from Beech Class and Georgia, Max, Henry and Brooke from Oak Class. They will work with Mr Saban throughout the year, contributing to decisions on playtimes, special curriculum events, charitable fund-raising and considering ideas from their classmates for discussion at meetings.
Congratulations to all - I look forward to seeing the things you will achieve, working together for our school this year.
Parent Governor Elections
Yesterday, all our parents should have received an email regarding our election process for two Parent Governor places on our Governing Body. Please look out for the email if you haven't yet picked it up.
Every four years our Parent Governor positions are reconsidered and all parents are welcome to put their names forward to step into this role. There is a very specific timetable for the whole process, the first important date being Thursday 25th September; the deadline for nominations to be sent to school by 12 noon that day. If school receives more than two nominations then a voting process will be completed.
Thank you in advance to any parent who does put their name forward. The Parent Governor role is crucial in enabling us to capture parent voice and support us in continuing school development.
High School Applications
It's a busy week coming up for our local high school open evenings, all of which are in the dates section on the newsletter. I hope you all enjoy exploring different options, but don't forget to asks loads of questions.
For our Year 6 parents, please be aware that the deadline for high school applications is Friday 31st October and applications should be made online. If anyone is seeking any advice about this or high school choice, please pop in for a chat; Mrs Ingham or I will be happy to offer any advice.
Parents should also be aware that the deadline to register for the 11+ Grammar School test is today. If your child is considering having a go at the 11+, then you need to complete an application form on either the LRGS or LGGS website - an invitation to attend on Saturday 27th September to take the test, will then be sent to you.
Stars of the Week
Well done to Tommy in Holly Class, Coby in Elm Class, Amelia in Willow, Jaxon in Beech and Amelia in Oak who are our stars of the week for showing an amazing attitude to learning in the classroom, staying focused, helping others and taking care of their classroom space. Well done all.
How have they settled in?
Have you spotted the QR codes in the windows of the classrooms? These will take you to a small online survey letting us know how your child has settled in to their new class so far. It should take you no more than 30 seconds to complete so please do so, as it gives us invaluable feedback.
They will remain in the windows for another week so please do let us know how the settling in process has gone. Thank you.
