Overton St Helen's Primary School family news: Issue 17(25/26)

Weekly Round Up

The pace has certainly picked up this week and the days have flown by, leading us to this point on Friday, seemingly so soon again! Each class has worked hard this week, making tracks into their new texts and topics and the mood has been studious to say the least. This morning we heard some really impressive pieces of written work from Key Stage Two pupils, in our celebration worship.

It's been great to see our various after-school clubs begin again this week. Choir Club are beginning to work towards the Lancaster and Morecambe Big Sing performance, more details of which will come to parents shortly. Meanwhile the date for their performance, including another which Elm Class will take part in, are included in the dates section below.

Today, Oak class were visited by Lancaster Fire and Rescue team to deliver a talk on road safety awareness; always an important lesson. We are always happy to see them visit Overton and thank them for giving their time to help us learn some valuable skills.

Class Newsletters

Class newsletters for Spring Term are beginning to pop up in the 'News' section of the website. Please have a look for the ones relevant for your child as they contain lots of important information that will be very useful.

Fence Update

You may have noticed that we still have temporary fencing at the front of the school. This is as we wait for a new fence to be installed at both sides of the front of the building, which unfortunately has been delayed. The original plan was for it to be installed before Christmas!

I have heard from the fencing company this week who have assured me that the wait will not be much longer now, so please bear with us. When work does recommence, we may have to re-direct footfall, however if this is the case, we will let you know.

Reading at Home

Each Friday morning, we always celebrate a sizeable group of pupils who have gained certificates for reaching the next milestone in their reading development, be that a 'colour band' certificate in KS1 or a bronze, silver or gold certificate for the amount of books read in KS2. No doubt you have heard me on many different occasions telling the pupils just how important reading is; reading skills not only allow our pupils to enjoy the love of a good book, but unlock many other opportunities for learning at school and in life.

Please, please continue to read at home with your child - even spending just 10 minutes a day can make such a huge difference. If books from school have already been read, then find other things to read: a good story, a recipe, a road sign or a list. The more you as parents help your child to practice their reading, the more confident their abilities will be.

School Nurse Drop In Sessions - Reminder

The School Nurses team have managed to organise a monthly drop in session for any parents who wish to contact them. This could be for many various reasons, from advice about diet or sleep, to issues around toileting or behaviour. They will be held on the first Wednesday of each month during term time, at Morecambe Library.

Remember, the school nurse can always be reached through a referral from school. If parents need this for any reason, please talk to class teachers or Mrs Easthope about any worry or concern you may have. Alternatively, pop down to a drop in session.

Star of the Week

A huge well done to Lucia in Maple Class, Imogen in Holly Class, Evan in Elm, Holly in Willow Class, Martha in Beech Class and Will in Oak, who were our Stars of the Week, receiving their certificates this morning in worship. Our Stars have demonstrated some great skills in their work this week, growing in confidence with their own abilities and working consistently hard.

Well done!
